[Yuyao Buddha Carving]. Buddha carving originated in Wei and Jin Dynasties, flourished in Tang Dynasty, and has a history of more than 1000 years. Yuyao woodcarving, mainly based on Buddha carving, began in the Ming Dynasty and concentrated in Lubu Town, Yuyao. It has been passed down from generation to generation and has a high reputation. The Qing Dynasty was the heyday of Buddha carving. The temples in some Southeast Asian countries and the Buddha statues in famous temples such as Mount Tai, Huashan and Putuo were mostly made by land port craftsmen. China's Buddha statues are generally divided into wood carving, stone carving, clay carving, bronze carving and so on, while the southeast coast is good at wood carving. Wood carving is different from Zhejiang Art School and Fujian Art School. The concentration of Zhejiang Art School is centered on the land port, and its skills are famous far and wide. Yuyao woodcarving is mostly based on figures in Buddhist classics and myths and legends, such as Sakyamuni, Guanyin, Luohan, Maitreya, Wei Tuo, Dizang, Jigong and Guan Gong. These Buddha statues are mostly hand-carved with camphor wood and teak, with exquisite shapes, different expressions, lifelike, smooth lines and simple style, and are regarded as treasures by Buddhism 1. Yuyao woodcarving technology has a long history and has experienced several ups and downs. On the eve of liberation, the woodcarving of Buddha statues was on the verge of extinction. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the government organized artists scattered everywhere, set up arts and crafts carving factories, and invited old artists to pass on their skills and apprentices, and the woodcarving skills were reborn. However, during the Cultural Revolution, the Buddha statue was criticized as a product of feudal superstition, and the wood carving of the Buddha statue was on the verge of despair. After the reform and opening-up, the wood carving technology of Buddha statues reappeared with brilliant prospects. At present, Yuyao Lubu woodcarving Buddha statue is an export product of Ningbo, which is mainly sold to the United States, Southeast Asian countries, Hong Kong, Macao and other countries and regions.
